Gregario Faigon, acting president of the DAIA, the representative organization of Argentine Jewry, said here that the organization was maintaining a “state of alertness” in spite of “very tranquilizing” statements made by Argentine President Juan Carlos Ongania to a DAIA delegation last summer and the very satisfactory Rosh Hashana greeting sent by the President to the Jewish community.
Addressing the annual meeting of the DAIA, Mr. Faigon noted that there was a marked absence of Jewish figures in positions of importance in the Ongania administration. He said the DAIA was acting with “great caution and circumspection.”
Dr. Hans Reich, vice-president of the Chilean Jewish Representative Committee, reported that anti-Semitism was no problem in Chile as long as the economic situation does not lead to the search for a scapegoat. He lauded the recent visit to his country by Israel President Zalman Shazar as having contributed significantly to excellent relations between the Chilean population and the Jewish community.
