The Jewish community of Argentina is deeply concerned over the increasing manifestations of anti-Semitism in this country to which they link the fire that destroyed a $2 million Israeli trade exhibition at the Buenos Aires fair grounds two weeks ago. The DAIA, Argentine Jewry’s central representative body, held an extraordinary session here today attended by delegates from the provinces, to consider the problem.
Dr. Isaac Goldenberg, president of the DAIA, said that anti-Semitism in Argentina was more active this year than in 1967 but that the Government was unresponsive to Jewish appeals to officially repudiate it. He said that Nazi-like journals are freely circulated in Buenos Aires and cemeteries are desecrated. Only yesterday, 25 swastikas were painted on the walls of the Jewish cemetery in the town of Tablada.
Dr. Goldenberg maintained that the destruction of the Israeli pavilion was not an isolated incident but part of a chain of events. He took sharp issue with last week’s statement by Minister of Interior Dr. Guillermo Borda who said the evidence was insufficient to conclude that the fire was the result of “criminal acts.” A representative of the Ministry of Interior was present at the DAIA sessions which the newspaper “La Razon” described as “secret.”
