The Argentine Committee for Peace in the Middle East, an organization composed mainly of Communists who broke with the party in protest against Soviet anti-Israel policy after the Six-Day War, called today for direct negotiation between Israel and the Arabs as “the most efficient form of understanding and the best way to prevent further warfare in the area.”
The committee, headed by Dr. Moises Polak, an internationally known physician, researcher and educator, Dr. Norberto Rodriguez Bustamente and Dr. Sergiu Bagu, called on all “progressive forces” to exercise their influence to assure a stable peace in the Middle East and the end of the arms race there. It said that peace could be assured only by recognition of the legitimate existence and sovereignty of Israel and the Arab states.
It described as “ideological distortion” the identification of Israel by progressive (leftist) elements with imperialism and the Arab states with progress and anti-imperialism. It deplored the failure of leftist assemblies to recognize the “bellicose chauvinism” of the Arab states and their continued discrimination against Israel.
