Parents of Jewish students at the Sarmiento National High School here, where anti-Semitic gangs aided by students of the nearby Catholic University attacked Jewish pupils two weeks ago, shooting one of the Jewish boys, took Up the matter today with President Arturo Frondizi.
The Jewish parents protested against anti-Semitism at the school, and demanded vigorous counter-action. They had protested previously, after the outbreak, against the hesitation on the part of police and schools. officials to take action against the anti-Semitic gangs They requested that “strong action” be taken by the Government to stop violence in the schools.
The rise of anti-Semitism in the schools was attributed here today by Antonio Cardinal Caggiano to Communist influence. “Anti-Semitism,” said the Catholic primate, “is being artificially provoked here by the Communists in order to disturb the peace. Excesses may be excusable in youth because of their immaturity, but it is inexcusable on the part of adults who use the youth for their own ends.”
“There cannot be a Jewish problem, ” continued the Cardinal, “since Jews are people with the same rights as other Argentines. I am afraid that those who use violence are being used–perhaps unknowingly.”
