Ariel Sharon contested a report that he had threatened to disrupt Palestinian elections if Hamas is allowed on the ballot. Addressing U.S. Jewish officials in New York City on Sunday, the Israeli prime minister said his comments, which appeared the previous day in the New York Times, were misconstrued. “It’s not that we are not going to let them have elections, but we will not provide them with any support” if the Palestinian Authority does not disarm Hamas and if the terrorist group’s charter, which calls for Israel’s destruction, is not altered, Sharon told members of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.
