Ariel Sharon said the intifada might have been avoided if Israel had paid attention earlier to Palestinian violations of the Oslo accords. Speaking at Israel’s memorial ceremony for the 2,689 Israeli soldiers killed in the 1973 Yom Kippur War, the Israeli prime minister also said, “The Arab world has still not accepted our existence and still has not accepted our birthright to build a Jewish state in our birthplace.”
