Aristotle’s Metaphysics Translated into Hebrew

Aristotle’s “Metaphysics,” translated for the first time into Hebrew from Greek, appears as the latest publication of the Press Association of the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. Professor Leon Roth, who holds the Ahad Haam Chair of Philosophy at the Hebrew University, is the translator.

Although Aristotle’s philosophy formed the basis for thinking of such great Jewish philosophers as Maimonides, according to Professor Roth, before this time Jews have not had access to the work in Hebrew. Other translations of Aristotle’s famous work were made in Hebrew during the Middle Ages, through the medium of Arabic and other languages.

To be used as a textbook in the philosophy courses at the Hebrew University, Aristotle’s “Metaphysics” is one of a series of philosophical classics prepared for students and the general public by Profossor Roth, formerly Lecturer at the University of Manchester, England, and author of “Spinoza.”

The panoply and pride of the ancient Saracenic sultans, princes and #nights, as expressed vividly and colorfully in heraldic devices and armorial #earings, appear in “Saracenic Heraldry” by Dr. L. A. Mayer, of the School of Oriental Studies of the Hebrew University. Representing the work of seven years, the book is published today by the Clarendon Press at Oxford.

Dr. Mayer, formerly librarian and keeper of records in the Department of Antiquities in the Palestine Government, assumed his post as full time Professor at the Hebrew University on January 3rd, as the first occupant of the newly established Sassoon David Chair of Moslem Art and Archaeology.
