George Arliss who appears in “The House of Rothschild,” opening this evening at the Astor Theatre, has twice scored popular success and received critical acclaim for his interpretation of Jewish roles. Both on the stage and on the screen, his enactment of Disraeli was favorably received and his sympathetic portrayal of Shylock in “The Merchant of Venice” was one of the few such performances that met with the approval of Jewish leaders. In “The House of Rothschild,” the Joseph M. Schenck-Darryl Zanuck 20th Century production, Mr. Arliss enacts the roles, of Mayer Amschel Rothschild, founder of the House, and his son Nathan, most illustrious of the clan.
A cast of over a hundred support the star in this, his first production for 20th Century Pictures, Featured are Loretta Young, Boris Karloff, Helen Westley, Robert Young, C. Aubrey Smith, Reginald Owen and Mrs. Arliss.
