Israel Ambassador Abba Eban indicated today that recent events have shown Israel cannot count on the United Nations to prevent Arab aggression and that he is renewing efforts to obtain arms.

Referring to developments at the United Nations, Mr. Eban said that if the majority could be intimidated from expressing a desire for peace how can one be sure it will articulate its desire to prevent war?” He was addressing the Washington chapter of the American Jewish Committee. Declaring that Israel may experience several more years of a situation of neither war nor peace, Mr. Eban said that arms questions is still Israel’s main concern.

The danger of war against Israel has been intensified and the cause of peace in the Middle East betrayed by the Arabs and communists acting together at the United Nations, it was charged here today by Rabbi Philip S. Bernstein, chairman of the American Zionist Committee for Public Affairs. The statements of the Arabs and the surrender of the great powers to their demand for the elimination of the words “mutually acceptable settlement” from the Security Council resolution casts grave doubts on Arab willingness to comply with the United Nations armistice agreements, he said.
