An Israel Defense Force patrol encountered and killed four heavily armed infiltrators who entered Israel from Egypt early Monday morning.
The intruders were caught several miles inside the Negev, having crossed the fenceless Sinai border, whose western sector is marked only by stone cairns, conical piles of stones which serve as monuments or landmarks.
In addition to their weapons, which included AK-47 assault rifles and a large number of hand grenades, the intruders carried several thousand dollars in currency and documents which indicated that their mission was to be a spectacular “showcase” attack on a heavily populated target.
The IDF has not yet established the gang’s affiliation.
