The Israel-Egyptian Mixed Armistice Commission condemned Egypt today for an attack by Egyptian forces on an Israel patrol post near the demilitarized zone in the Gaza area last week. One Israel soldier was killed and two were wounded in the attack.
The MAC resolution noted that the armistice line is clearly marked in the area where the attack occurred, and expressed its “grave concern” over the Egyptian action, which it called a “flagrant violation of the armistice pact.” It called on Egypt to halt further “aggressions.”
Syrian forces have continued their attacks against Israelis and Israel territory during the past 24 hours. This morning Syrian troops from across the border fired at shepherds at Kibbutz Dan, but no one was hit. Last night shots were fired at the border settlement of Harovim, but no casualties occurred.
Israel was informed by Lt. Col. Charles Brewster, United Nations chairman of the Israel-Jordan Mixed Armistice Commission, that the Jordanian authorities have informed him of the arrest of two men for the murder of two Jewish tractor operators at Agur, near the Jordan border. The arrested men are reportedly Palestine Arab refugees.
Meanwhile, Gen, E.L.M. Burns, UN truce chief, has cabled the United Nations for authorized detailed maps of the no man’s land area of Jerusalem to assist the Israel-Jordan MAC in its consideration of Israel’s complaint in reference to the attack in Jerusalem this week-end. The maps at the UN, which were drafted at the Rhodes armistice conference, are the only authoritative maps of the area in question. When they arrive the MAC will meet on Israel’s complaint.
