U.S. arms sales commitments to Middle East nations since February, exclusive of Israel, totalling approximately $4 billion, was called “a prescription for disaster” which “seriously dilutes the benefits all nations might have otherwise received as a result of the Sinai accord” by Sen. Dale Bumpers (D. Ark,).
“The increasing American influence in the Arab world…will not reduce tensions and lessen the prospect for hostilities, in the face of continued United Sates massive arms sales in the area, with the casual explanation that ‘if we don’t sell to them, someone else will.'”
Bumpers made his remarks at the S.Y. Agnon Gold Medal Award Dinner of the American Friends of the Hebrew University honoring maestro Arthur Rubinstein, Rubinstein, who last year was honored by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem with an honorary doctorate, received the Agnon Award from Martin Peretz, associate dinner chairman.
