The Royal Engineers were today put in charge of the international telephone system, which has been barred to newspaper correspondents.
All firms and individuals permitted to use the system are being asked to sign pledges that they will not transmit news to the press.
Thus far use of the foreign telephone service has been permitted only to the Government, military forces, the Jewish Agency for Palestine, banks and larger mercantile enterprises, and tourist agencies.
