The U.S. Army’s tentative evacuation program calls for the removal of some 4,700 displaced Jews by August 1. They will be assigned to 20 camps scattered throughout the American zone.
Joint Distribution Committee officials, assisting the Away on this project and also providing supplementary rations to the DP’s, have hailed the move as one which will aid the Jews in relation to their emigration plans. The J.D.C. officials also declared that the transfer will improve the condition of the DP’s, despite the fact that the camps to which they will be assigned will be overcrowded.
Meanwhile, the morale of the DP’s throughout the zone has been improved considerably by the emigration of DP’s to Israel. The second such grouping–consisting of 400 men, women and children–left here on the first leg of its journey. Dr. Chaim Hoffman, Jewish Agency representative here, who is leaving tomorrow for Tel Aviv to discuss the possibility of accelerating the emigration program, stated that the tentative plans of the Agency call for 3,000-4,000 Jews to leave Germany for Israel monthly.
