In what appears to be an attempt to discourage Eastern European Jews from entering Germany, the U.S. military authorities have ceased moving displaced Jews from Berlin to camps in the British zone and the southern portion of the American zone, it was learned today.
As a result the Duppel camp, which is the only large camp here, is jammed with refugees. At present, it houses more than double its normal 1,200 occupants. The Wittenau camp in the French zone of Berlin has about 500 residents, which has crowded it beyond capacity.
The Army apparently feels that if the displaced Jews are not moved from Berlin, it will discourage others from coming here. The problem will be discussed tomorrow with Rabbi Philip Bernstein, the Advisor on Jewish Affairs to the U.S. forces, who will meet here with representatives of the voluntary relief agencies and the Army.
