A high-ranking U.S. military observer who has just returned from Poland has submitted a report stating that 170,000 of the 200,000 Jews in that country can be expected to move to the American zone in Germany.
The report, which is now being studied by military authorities here, says that if the American zone’s borders were thrown open officially and emigration from Poland controlled, all Jews could probably be brought out of Poland within four months. The investigator stated that the Polish Government could be expected to cooperate fully in any such arrangement.
There is no indication here as to whether the Army will recommend officially controlled emigration from Poland, and the issue will probably be decided on higher political levels. It is known, however, that certain army officials favor either complete closing or complete opening of the frontiers, in order to facilitate proper handling of the migration problem.
