ARNOLD BERNSTEIN, JEWISH HEAD OF THE ARNOLD BERNSTEIN AND RED STAR SHIPPING LINES, IS ON TRIAL FOR HIS LIFE IN HAMBURG, GERMANY, TODAY UNDER AN ACCUSATION THAT HE COMMITTED TREASON AND VIOLATED FOREIGN EXCHANGE CONTROL LAWS.

BERNSTEIN, ON TRIAL WITH FIVE OTHER OFFICIALS OF THE LINES, IS CHARGED, ACCORDING TO HAMBURG DISPATCHES, WITH FAILING TO REPORT TO THE AUTHORITIES FOREIGN EXCHANGE IN THEIR POSSESSION ABROAD, EVEN AFTER IMMUNITY WAS ANNOUNCED FOR PERSONS SURRENDERING FOREIGN EXCHANGE PREVIOUSLY WITHHELD.

THE DEFENDANTS FACE THE DEATH PENALTY AND CONFISCATION OF THEIR PROPERTY UNDER THE “LAW AGAINST ECONOMIC SABOTAGE” OF DECEMBER, 1936. BERNSTEIN TOLD THE COURT THAT WHILE IT WAS POSSIBLE HE HAD VIOLATED SOME LEGAL FORM, THERE WAS NO INTENTION TO VIOLATE THE LAW.
