The Associated Press reported today from Berlin that Arnold Bernstein, head of the German Red Star and Arnold Bernstein shipping lines, and four directors of his companies had been arrested a week ago. Quoting an authoritative source, the dispatch said the reason for their arrests was not learned immediately.
In other quarters, the A.P. said, it was suggested the detention might have some connection with foreign exchange restrictions. The five were temporarily released, it was stated, to attend a conference in Hamburg with secret police and other officials at the instance of American creditors.
