The Ministry of Justice reported today that Hermann Hoefle, 49-year-old former SS officer who was arrested yesterday in Salzburg, has been charged with having been on accomplice of Adolf Eichmann in “solving the Jewish question.”
The Ministry said that Hoefle’s arrest was carried out after receipt of documentary evidence from the German State Prosecution Office, indicating he had a leading role in the mass murders of Jews in Poland, particularly in Warsaw and Lublin. He had recently worked as a commercial representative in Salzburg. The former Gestapo Colonel who directed the extermination of 5, 000, 000 European Jews, Frank Nowak, a key aide to the Nazi murder specialist, was arrested previously in Austria.
