The Anglo-Israel Association, the Anglo-Israel Association, the Anglo-Israel Chamber of Commerce and the Anglo-Israel Parliamentary Group joined today to give a farewell luncheon to Arthur Lourie, who is ending a tour of duty as Israeli Ambassador to Britain, and to Mrs. Lourie.
Dr. Francis Evans, chairman of the executive of the Anglo-Israel Association, speaking for the three groups, expressed regret at the pending departure of the Louries. Labor Minister Ray Gunther said that the envoy “was a great friend to many of us and to our country.” He added that the envoy understood “our problems as few outsiders did and made the Israelis understand them though they have not always appreciated our attitudes.”
The Ambassador said in response, the new British Government had meant no variation in British friendship and understanding toward Israel. He added that the scheduled visit this month of Israeli Prime Minister Levi Eshkol was a reflection of the friendly relations between the two countries. He said that the visit comes at a time “when friendship between the two countries has ripened and we hope the results of this visit will be a constructive amity and cooperation in the future.”
