Jewish artisans in Lithuania view with concern a proposed law requiring every artisan to undergo an examination for a diploma.
The Government, which is at present drafting the law, has not invited any representatives of the Jewish artisans, although it did consult the anti-Semitic Verslininki Organisation.
It is generally considered that the provisions of the new law aim chiefly at ousting the Jewish artisans from their present positions. Artisan certificates are to be issued to persons who have successfully undergone a special examination, and it is only those who possess such certificates that will be allowed to carry on with their trade. This regulation would make it impossible for most Jewish artisans to carry on their work.
