The Jewish brothers Zeidenbaitel, both internationally known painters, were attacked today in the streets of Danzig by an organized group of fifteen Nazis.
Despite the fact that the two artists are Polish citizens, they were arrested by the Danzig police on the charge of attacking Storm Troopers. The Polish authorities in Danzig are making representations to the Danzig Senate.
The Danziger Echo, the only Jewish newspaper published in the German language in Danzig, expresses grave concern today over what it terms “unmistakable symptoms” showing that the Danzig authorities have decided to treat the Jews as scapegoats for the financial difficulties now being experienced by the Free City.
The paper points out that the Jews are the ones who are suffering most from these financial troubles, which are a result of the devaluation of the Danzig currency.
“The Jews are the greatest victims of this devaluation, since the majority of them are engaged in trade and have incurred great losses with the decline in the value of the Danzig gulden,” the paper declares.
