“Aryanization” of Jewish-owned property in Hungary is meeting with great difficulties, it was disclosed today in reports of a Parliamentary debate reaching here.
Count Nikolaus Serenyi, who once served a jail sentence for anti-Semitic agitation, was told by one of his colleagues, Deputy Dr. Szindley, that Hungary’s economic life would be injured by enactment of the Serenyi bill for rapid exclusion of Jews from trade. “The solution of the Jewish question is not exclusively a political question, especially today, when we must consider the economic side of the question not only in our own interests but also in the interest of the wartime trade of our allies,” Dr. Szindley told the Parliament. “One could replace all the directors and big traders by Christians, but I am inclined to believe that trade would be damaged by this measure. It is impossible to reform trade so thoroughly by simply setting up a new list of names.”
