Premier Golda Meir today promised a delegation headed by Mayor Tzevi Zilker of Ashdod that she would study the problems of immigrant unemployment and law and order in that port city south of Tel Aviv. Mrs. Meir met for two-and-a-half hours with the delegation.
They came in the aftermath of last week’s demonstrations in Ashdod by recent immigrants from Soviet Georgia who were protesting the layoffs of 30 Georgian dock workers who had been hired on a temporary basis. In addition to Mayor Zilker the delegation included city council members, two immigrant representatives and Yehoshua Peretz, chairman of the Harbor Workers Committee.
They asked the Premier for increased government assistance in absorbing immigrants in Ashdod especially increased employment opportunities. They also urged that law and order be maintained in the city. Ashdod, Israel’s second largest seaport, has been the scene of labor strife on the docks during the past two years.
