Ashdod was a city of mourners yesterday as funeral services were held for the 13 victims of Tuesday’s road accident near Tiberias. They were among 58 persons on a truck that overturned while taking them to Lag B’Omer celebrations at Miron in northern Israel. The driver apparently lost control of the vehicle on a steep downgrade approaching the Sea of Galilee. An investigation of the accident has been ordered. Of the 45 passengers injured, 30 are still in hospitals and 15 were released after treatment.
An initial count of 14 fatalities was corrected to 13 after the bodies were brought to hospitals. Yesterday, the remains were transferred to the Ashdod morgue where relatives made positive identification. The dead are: Abigail and Eliezer Affinger; Zohara and Moshe Alon; Shalom Bahbout and his four-year-old grandson, Avi; Mordechai Saada; Peretz Atouel; Elis Abou-Hatzira; Anietan Ben-Shabat; Sultana Dadon; Simi Shemtoy and Fant Malke.
