The unification of the Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jewish communities here was formally proclaimed today at a meeting of Jewish community leaders presided over by H. Leibovici, secretary-general of the Federation of Jewish Communities. The merger was entered into on the basis of new by-laws adopted for the functioning of Jewish communities in Rumania which provides that no more than one Jewish community shall exist in any Rumanian town or city.
Mr. Leibovici declared that unification had always been the wish of the Jewish working people, but that they had been “intentionally divided by the former community leaders, who were strangers to the interests of the working masses.” Leon Stern was elected president of the new community, while Philip Stolper, I. Campus and S. Ellenbogen were named vice-presidents.
