The Ashkenazi congregation of Amsterdam today celebrated the 325th anniversary of its founding against a background of the Nazi deportation and slaughter of all but 8,000 of the pre-war Jewish population of 100,000. The large synagogues in the center of the former Amsterdam Ghetto were sold in 1954 to the Amsterdam Municipality. Only the famous Sephardi Synagogue remains.
