An imposing deputation consisting of British statesmen and representatives of all faiths, including Chief Rabbi Dr. Hertz, appeared today before Sir John Simon, the British Foreign Minister, and asked him to urge the League of Nations to include the problem of German-Jewish refugees within the scope of its work.
The delegation proposed that Great Britain support a proposal that the League create a permanent organization in Geneva to handle the problem of thousands of refugees spread over Europe and Asia. The delegation pointed out that the plight of these refugees is constantly increasing.
WANT LEAGUE OFFICE
Apprehension was expressed by the deputation with regard to the contemplated liquidation of the Nansen office. The group explained that the maintenance costs which the governments will incur in a permanent League organization at Geneva for handling the refugee problems will be the only contribution necessary.
The delegation was headed by Prof. Gilbert Murray. It included Lord Cecil, Lady Simon, Chief Rabbi Hertz, representatives of the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Quakers’ organization, the League of National Union and other organizations.
Lord Cecil, speaking for the delegation, emphasized that the problem of the refugees must be dealt with by the League in a more effective manner than now. It is impossible to allow the present situation of the refugees to continue without danger of great disturbances, he pointed out.
