Ask Non-jews to Mark Birth of Maimonides

A national advisory council has been formed to obtain cooperation from universities, colleges and non-Jewish students in celebrating the eight hundredth anniversary of the birth of Moses Maimonides, medieval Jewish sage and philosopher, it was announced yesterday by the Maimonides Octocentennial Committee, whose headquarters are at 64 West Forty-eighth street.

Headed by Professor Salo W. Baron of Columbia University, the council also will supervise preparation of books and treatises on the life and works of Maimonides. The actual anniversary date will fall on March 30, exactly 800 years after the scholar’s birth in Cordoba. A meeting to celebrate the event will be held on April 14.

A committee on universities and colleges, which will enlist non-Jewish scholars, theological institutions and universities in the observance, will be composed of Dr. M. J. Benardete and Professors Morris R. Cohen, Richard Gottheil, Isaac Husik, Nathan Isaacs, Edward Sapir, Israel Wechsler and Harry A. Wolfson.

Issuance of scholarly works on Maimonides will be supervised by a publication committee. Members include Dr. Samuel H. Goldenson and Professors Louis Finkelstein, Jekuthiel Ginsburg, Alexander Marx, Henry Slonimsky and Chaim Tchernowitz.
