Need Is Greater as American Jewish Assistance Subsides (Jewish Telegraphic Agency)
The problem of the care for Jewish orphans in Poland is intrinsically a state problem and the government is obliged to take such measures as will provide the funds necessary for continuing the orphan care work inaugurated by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee.
This argument was made by Deputy H. Rozmarin speaking in behalf of the Club of Jewish Deputies in the budget commission of the Polish Sejm during the discussion yesterday on the estimates of the Ministry of Labor.
The Polish government cannot permit a condition similar to that prevailing in Soviet Russia where orphans uncared for roamed about in the streets. The government should seek ways of influencing the municipal governments to provide for the Jewish war orphans who were, until recently, cared for by the funds supplied through the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee. It was due to the work of this committee that orphan homes were built. Lately, the assistance given by the J. D. C. has been considerably reduced and it may soon be entirely withdrawn. The Jewish population is greatly perturbed over the fate which may befall the Jewish war orphans, the deputy declared.
