The Jewish colonists of Petach Tikvah were asked to make provision for the employment of Jewish workers during the harvest work in the colony at a conference called by the Assistant District Commissioner of Jaffa.
To the representatives of the colonists and Jewish workers the Commissioner declared he was anxious to prevent a repetition of the labor troubles which occured last year when Jewish workers demanded an opportunity for employment in the colony at a time when the Arab merchants who purchased the colony crop employed only Arab workers for the harvesting. The Commissioner asked that the colonists insert in their contracts with the merchants a clause obliging the latter to employ Jewish labor.
The colonists stated that all they can do is to exercise their influence with the contractors, but they cannot demand the insertion of a specific clause to this effect.
The workers’ representatives suggested the creation of a joint commission to solve the question.
