A proposal to cut the Colonial Office Appropriations for the Middle Eastern countries, including Palestine, was defeated in the House of Commons today by a vote of 297 against 186.
Speaking on the motion, Captain Foxcroft proposed that the Palestine High Commissioner, Sir Herbert Samuel, be supplanted “by an ordinary Englishman without Zionist fads”. Foxcroft also urged that the British government give the Arabs control of immigration in Palestine.
“Sir Herbert Samuel”, said Foxcroft, “is an able mah, but as a Zionist is attempting to do the impossible”. The Commons member also asked that Norman Bentwitch, the Legal Secretary be replaced by “an ordinary gentleman without an axe to grind”.
“If the government did this, the Arab unrest would disappear”, he said. “The Arabs believe the constitution offered is a mere camouflage to keep Samuel in perpetual control. They believe that the right of self-government in Palestine is being purposely held up until a sufficient number of alien Jews are imported there to out-number the resident inhabitants. The Arabs want guarantees against this”.
