That the National Federation of Temple Brotherhoods, of which he is president, must “combat the corrosive, brutal theory of materialism” in America, was suggested by Roger W. Straus at Sunday night’s ference of Temple Brotherhoods.

“Leaders of American public opinion are combatting this condition, and I believe they are making headway in correcting the situation. The National Federation of Temple Brotherhoods was formed to aid the solidification and growth of the spiritual awakening amongst Jewish laymen throughout the country.

“It is many centuries since your forefathers, under the leadership of the Maccabees, successfully defended the ideal of religious liberty and the belief in the one God which have been keystones in the arch of civilization. It is now in your hands in the new, less dramatic but equally difficult, warfare, that of the spirit and intellect, to combat the corrosive, brutal theory of materialism, and thereby to again serve our religion, our country and humanity.”
