The American Minister to Austria, G. B. Stockton, attended the ceremonies inaugurating the new rector of the University of Vienna today.

The evening press commenting upon the American Minister’s presence at the ceremonies allege that a suitable reception was not accorded him by the Austrian authorities. This, they assume, is the revenge of the authorities, for the American Minister’s intervention in behalf of the American students attacked during the anti-Semitic excesses at Vienna University.

The attendance of the American envoy, it is presumed, was aimed to demonstrate that Austrian-American con-

flict is over since the authorities have re-established peace.

The ceremonies passed without incident in the presence of strong police guards on hand to protect the University in the event of Nazi demonstrations, particularly against foreign envoys who made representations to the Austrian authorities during the recent disturbances.
