The Jewish Labor Committee today made public the text of a letter from Assistant Secretary Breckinridge Long in which he admits that his statement before the House Foreign Affairs Committee to the effect that 580,000 refugees have entered the United States during the last ten years is not correct.

The Assistant secretary says in his letter that after a detailed study he has established that the State Department authorized during the above period the issuance of 568,556 visas of which 544,999 actually were issued. The Jewish Labor Committee, in its communication to Assistant Secretary Long, quoted the official reports of the department of Labor and Department of justice as stating that only 476,930 aliens entered the United States during the last ten years. Of these, the Jewish Labor Committee pointed out, 163,680 came from Mexico, Canada and the South American countries, and 17,232 from Africa. Thus, the number of immigrants from Europe for all the ten years since Hitler came to power was slightly over 296,000 persons of whom 165,756 were Jews.
