At the Jewish National Fund Negev Dinner held here Dec. 1971, 11 families each subscribed $25,000 in honor of John W.H. Bassett, at that time publisher of the Toronto Telegram, one of the largest dailies in Canada, as a mark of tribute for his friendship for Israel and the Jewish community. These funds were used to establish a sports center in the Arava kibutz at Yotvata in Israel. That center was dedicated last month by the Toronto United Jewish Appeal mission led by Murray B. Koffler in the presence of Bassett and his wife.
