The monthly review “Epismologus” (a scientific publication) of Athens, published by an obscure person, contained in its last number the following remarks on the subject of the Jews in Salonica:

“After the liberation of Salonica by the Greek army, the Ministers for Foreign Affairs of the great Powers were inundated with protests against the annexation of the capital of Macedonia to Greece. These protests came from the Jewish minority of Salonica, who, incited by Italian and Austrian propaganda, demanded the restoration of Ottoman rule, or else its autonomy under a Jewish regime. This demand was accompanied by numerous calumnies against Hellenism, which important foreign papers published daily. An unprecedented campaign was organized against Hellenism, supported by the anti-Greek diplomacy of Austria and Italy. The majority of the Jews of Salonica, expressing in practical form their hatred of Hellenism, installed themselves in Europe after Salonica had definitely been ceded to Greece, taking with them their fortunes amounting to about 400 million drachmas. But those who remained did not cease their anti-Greek agitation. After the formation of the League of Nations they had recourse to it on several occasions to slander the Greek administration and to demand autonomy. Since then, they have let no opportunity pass of criticising the Greek regime and manifesting their hostility to it. The Greek language is despised in their schools and business. ‘We’ and ‘they’ is their common phrase. They invariably unite with the elements who wish to harm—no matter how—Greek interests, and give their voluntary support to all anti-Greek propaganda. In examining the question in a more general fashion, we see on the one hand that the Jews are pursuing the economic conquest of the world, and on the other hand are the creatures of Russian communism. The antithesis is perfectly obvious, for a universal domination of Communism is equal to Jewish sovereignity over humanity.”

The anti-Semitic journal Makedonia, of Salonica, which was the chief author of the anti-Jewish campaign which resulted in the burning of the Campbell quarter in 1931, reproduced this article under the title of “Surprising Revelations, the Separate Electoral College for Jews Should Not Be Suppressed”. Jews have been agitating for the abolition of this College, which has just been ordered by the Government, on the ground that they resent the segregation which its existence implies.

In connection with the publication of this article, Jewish papers recall that it deals with old calumnies often repeated against the Jews of Salonica.
