Atlanta extended a warm welcome to Nehama Lifschitz yesterday. The Russian-born Jewish folksinger, who left her native land earlier this year to become a citizen of Israel, was here on a concert tour sponsored by Premier Golda Meir of Israel. She was greeted by Mayor Ivan Allan and, accompanied by the Israel Consul General, Moshe Gilboa, visited a Hebrew day school.
Miss Lifschitz told the youngsters that she hoped Jewish youth in Russia will some day have the same rights to study Hebrew and other Jewish subjects as the children of Atlanta. The Atlanta Constitution, a daily newspaper, welcomed the singer in an editorial which described her as “a symbol of Jewish identification.” A welcoming committee for Miss Lifschitz, headed by Mayor Allan, included Mrs. Martin Luther King Jr., widow of the slain Negro civil rights leader, and Mayor-elect Sam Massell, a Jew.
