The statement on Palestine which was expected to be issued today by Prime Minister Attlee in the House of Commons was not made. The Prime Minister told Commons this afternoon that he hoped to make a statement on the Palestine question “in the near future.”
Conservative and anti-Zionist member of Parliament Lord Winterton declared that every moment of delay in this matter would make the solution harder than it would have been had the Government “taken courage.” Amid laughter, Prime Minister Attlee replied: “It is not a question of taking courage, but of taking thought first.”
Azzam Bey, general secretary of the Arab League, yesterday addressed a meeting of parliamentarians on the Palestine issue. The Jewish Telegraphic Agency learns that only fourteen members of Parliament, several of them pro-Zionists, attended the gathering as compared with the 150 who attended a similar meeting last week with Dr. Chaim Teirmann.
