Prime Minister Attlee will probably visit the United States before Christmas to discuss the Palestine question and other matters of dicision interest to the United States and Britain, it is reported today in the London press. The report adds that the Prime Minister’s residence would neither deny nor confirm that he is planning to visit President Truman.
Recent suggestions that Jewish immigration be diverted to Cyrenaica or Tripolitania to avoid conflict in Palestine are rejected in a letter to the Times by William Kennedy Shaw, former civil affairs officer of the British military administration in Tripolitania, Shaw writes that settlement there would also be “at the expense of the Arabs,” and stresses that the country is semi-desert and can only obsorb a limited number of immigrants.
Anwar Nashashibi, speaking for the Arab office here, declares in the Manchester Guardian today that the White Paper can be altered only by force. The only solution of the Palestine problem, he says, is to grant the Jews already there cultural and religious freedom, while the refugee problem is settled by the world, not the Arabs. Nashashibi also rejects partition, asserting that it would sow the seeds of a new hundred- year war.
