Charges of “dual citizenship” leveled against American Jews were denounced here last night by Attorney-General J. Howard McGrath, addressing a special New England conference of the United Palestine Appeal. “I can see no possible problem of it in anything loyal American citizens of the Jewish faith do in helping Israel,” he said.
Mr. McGrath continued: “By helping Israel, the American Jew links himself with Jewry everywhere in developing their common heritage–the ethical principles of every religion–liberty, justice and the brotherhood of man. Indeed, the establishment of the state of Israel has brought new dignity to every Jew everywhere,” he said.
The U.S. Attorney-General also asserted that it was in the “best interests of America” for Israel to “stand as a strong outpost of freedom and democracy in the Near East.” He declared further in referring to Israel that a “self-governing, dignified, strong and free nation in that part of the world will be a potent element in achieving and maintaining universal peace.” Other speakers included Dr. Nahum Goldmann, chairman of the American section of the Jewish Agency, and Rudolf G. Sonnsborn, chairman of the U.P.A. board of directors.
