An international conference of Jewish and Christian scholars from all over the world on the holocaust, titled Auschwitz–Beginning of a New Era,” opened here this morning at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine.
The symposium, to be held through Thursday, has one main purpose, according to the Rev. James Parks Morton who welcomed the more than 300 participants. The purpose of the symposium, he said, is “to get the holocaust into the mind of an entire generation” to which “the holocaust is almost an unknown world.” He was referring to the generation born after the holocaust.
The symposium, which was almost a year in preparation, is sponsored by various churches and Jewish organizations. According to the organizers “There has never been a conference like this….Never before have the full implications of Auschwitz been publicly aired by Jew and Christian in dialogue in which Black rights and women’s rights will be directly tied to the Jewish holocaust experience.” The papers giving during the symposium will be published in a book.
