The panel of West German judges which has been trying 22 former Auschwitz administrators and medical corpsmen for the murder of hundreds of thousands of Jews at Auschwitz and Birkenau, will hold court in Vienna tomorrow. The trial has been under way at Frankfurt since December. The judges decided to come here so as to hear several witnesses who have been too ill to travel to Frankfurt.
Meanwhile, it was reported here, the court is considering the possibility of holding some of its sessions at the former site of the Auschwitz death factory, in Poland. Negotiations for such an inspection of Auschwitz are under way between Poland and West Germany now. Eight of the 22 defendants, however, have informed the court they will exercise their rights under German law, and will refuse to go to Auschwitz. It is understood that the court may go to Auschwitz with those defendants who are willing to go there, or may appoint a commission to inspect the Auschwitz site.
