A former German naval officer with a Jewish wife who attempted to enter the country among a group of some 700 Jewish refugees from Europe has been barred by Arthur Calwell, Australian Minister of Immigration, announced.
The German, identified as Egon Karl Larch, was recognized by a Jewish passenger aboard the Dutch liner Johan Do With who denounced him to the authorities as “the S.S. officer in charge of our concentration camp in Austria.” Calwell has promised that precautions will be taken to prevent further attempts by Nazis to enter the country.
