TIGHTENING OF IMMIGRATION REGULATIONS BY THE DEPARTMENT OF INTERIOR WAS REVEALED TODAY BY THE AUSTRALIAN JEWISH WELFARE SOCIETY, WHOSE BRANCHES THROUGHOUT AUSTRALIA DEAL WITH GERMAN AND POLISH JEWISH IMMIGRATION. THE SOCIETY ANNOUNCED RECEIPT FROM THE INTERIOR DEPARTMENT OF A SPECIAL STATEMENT NOTIFYING IT OF DRASTIC ALTERATIONS IN REGULATIONS GOVERNING ADMISSION OF IMMIGRANTS NOT BROUGHT OVER BY RELATIVES.
WHILE PREVIOUSLY THE GOVERNMENT WAS CONTENT TO ACCEPT FROM THE SOCIETY A GUARANTEE THAT THE PROSPECTIVE IMMIGRANT POSSESSED $250 AND WOULD NOT BECOME A CHARGE UPON THE GENERAL COMMUNITY, THE FEDERAL AUTHORITIES NOW DEMAND IN ADDITION TO THE LANDING MONEY A CERTIFICATE FROM THE PROSPECTIVE EMPLOYER OF THE IMMIGRANT GUARANTEEING THAT SUCH EMPLOYMENT IS NOT BEING MADE TO THE DETRIMENT OF ANY AUSTRALIAN.
THE SOCIETY IS FINDING DIFFICULTY IN OBTAINING SUCH CERTIFICATES FROM EMPLOYERS AND IS TAKING THE MATTER UP WITH THE FEDERAL AUTHORITIES.
THE FORTHCOMING NATIONAL ELECTION, TO BE HELD AT THE END OF OCTOBER, IS EXPECTED TO HAVE AN IMPORTANT BEARING ON THE ENTIRE IMMIGRATION QUESTION. IF THE PRESENT UNITED AUSTRALIAN PARTY IS RETURNED TO POWER, THE EARLIER IMMIGRATION POLICY IS EXPECTED TO BE RESUMED. IF THE LABOR PARTY IS RETURNED, HOWEVER, LITTLE HOPE IS HELD HERE FOR ANY EASING OF THE RESTRICTIONS.
