Maurice Ashkenazy was elected president of the Council of Australian Jewry, succeeding Sydney Enfeld, who was named Senior vice president.

Moses Leavitt, executive vice chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee, addressed a private session of the Council on the situation of European Jewry, including the Jews behind the Iron Curtain.

Delegates adopted a resolution expressing their fears for Israel’s security as a result of recent upheavals in surrounding Arab countries and voiced the hope that stability would soon be restored.
