The semi-annual conference of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry here decided to inform all organizations and institutions abroad which send fund-raising missions to Australia that all such appeals must, in the future, be authorized by the Executive Council or its constituent bodies. The conference made this decision in view of the fact that the arrival of many fund-raisers from abroad has created a confused situation in the Australian Jewish community with respect to fund-raising.
The conference also decided to invite an outstanding Jewish personality from abroad–preferably from Britain — to tour Australia to help strengthen the link between Australian Jewry and Jewish communities abroad. The delegates also urged Jewish youths here to avoid “actions and decisions which in their religious, political or international implications may be regarded as prejudicial to the welfare of the Jewish community.” This was interpreted as a rebuke to one Jewish youth group which last year sent a delegation to the “Festival of Youth” in East Berlin.
The Executive Council called upon the Australian Government to use its influence with the Egyptian Government to secure observance of the U.N. Security Council resolution demanding that Egypt cease interfering with Israel-bound traffic in the Suez Canal.
