In the midst of attacks on Jewish immigration to Australia in Parliament and in most of the press, the Sydney Daily Telegraph has rallied to the Jewish cause with a reminder to the Australian people of the Jews’ suffering under Nazi rule.
In an editorial, the Telegraph said: “Surely we have not forgotten that the particular blackguardism which most deeply stirred the British people before the war were pogroms and concentration camps. This was the most decisive factor in organizing our hatred of the German regime and our will to break it. We must never forget our own horror at the Nazis’ ruthless determination to deny a racially different minority the right to exist.”
