It was but two days ago that Chancellor Schuschnigg solemnly reiterated his pledge that Jews would be accorded full equality and all the rights of citizens in Austria. His government will make no distinction between citizens on the basis of race or religion, he assured a Jewish delegation.
Recently, at Geneva, Dr. Schuschnigg made a statement to this same effect. Within a week, the Austrian government promulgated the decree establishing ghetto schools for Jewish pupils.
Now, on the heels of his second pledge, comes the report that eighty Jewish officials and twenty-six Jewish physicians have been summarily dismissed.
Is Dr. Schuschnigg to be believed? Or does he hope to fool the world at large by doing one thing and saying another?
