An authoritative statement was issued by the government today denying the possibility of Jewish discrimination by putting into effect a numerus clausus law for Jews. The statement assured Jews equality with other religious classes in the country and pointed out that Austrian Jews will enjoy the fullest rights in accordance with this country’s constitution.
The government, under the leadership of Chancellor Engelbert Doll-fuss, does not intend to change existing Austrian laws dealing with the treatment of religious questions, according to today’s statement. The statement, which was in effect a denial of previous semi-official rumors regarding racial and religious discrimination laws being planned, was circulated by the official Austrian Telegraph Agency. It was observed, however, that the government communique was circulated only in foreign countries, and not within the boundaries of Austria.
